Richt: ‘No chance’ of UGA wearing black jerseys vs. Auburn

Soon after the Georgia Bulldogs finished rolling over Kentucky 63-31, UGA fans began calling for a Blackout of the Auburn game on Nov. 15.

That was due, in part, as an homage to the 2007 Auburn Blackout and the return of Todd Gurley. Gurley, who has been suspended since Oct. 9, has served his four-game suspension and will play vs. Auburn.

Fans on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and more have called for a blackout this weekend, even going so far as to create some awesome mockups of the current Dawgs in black jerseys (see below).

But tonight on his Sunday teleconference, Mark Richt quashed the rumors and possibility of the players wearing black jerseys against Auburn.

If you’ll recall, a similar situation arose last season for the Kentucky game. It was the final home game for Aaron Murray and the other seniors. When asked about the possibility of black jerseys then, Richt said they didn’t even have any.

“If I had black jerseys to give them, I’d have them wear them. We just don’t have them. I don’t know if that’s going to break everybody’s heart or not, but we don’t have any black jerseys in stock. If we did, I’d be all for it.”

That may be the case again this year. The coaches may not want to wear black jerseys, or maybe they haven’t requested any from Nike since changing the jerseys to the new Bulldog Bold style.

With that seemingly behind us now, fans can still call for a Blackout of the stands. After all, UGA is the Red & Black.

  • I am so glad he is not letting them wear black, don't like black & gray; red & silver much better.

  • The Dawgs should adopt a new Alternate Home Black Jersey so when we do wear them it is not seen as a "gimmick". The Black Jerseys worn in 2007 looked great and they still wore the traditional Silver Britches. With the new SEC Network time slots, I suggest we wear Black jerseys for all home game scheduled after 3:30pm. This will still let us wear our traditional home uniforms if we play on the CBS National Game of the Week and during the hot games at 12pm. Blackouts look great at night and it should give UGA and added recruiting tool without having to resort to chrome helmets or neon colors.

    • Ahh Seth, you are a man after my own heart. I believe our battle for the black jersey has got to be won in the offices of Greg Mcgarity and the Georgia Bulldog Club. I love the red jersey, but if anyone wants to talk about tradition, the addition of that black jersey honors the three most successful coaching regimes in UGA football history. That uniform represents the contributions of Wally Butts, Vince Dooley, and Mark Richt. Now, to me, that's tradition perfected.

  • We should never, ever need any added motivation to play a big rival like Auburn. LEAVE THE UNIFORMS ALONE!!!!!! Stay traditional

  • I have a friend who works at UnderArmour HQ in Baltimore. Evidently, Auburn is going to wear a white on white "Ghost" jersey and Ghost helmet combo for the game as one-upsmanship over the Dawgs. Sic 'em.

      • To me, it seems ridiculous to call for a "Red Out" when we are not allowed to have a "Black Out." Every Dawg fan, who likes the black jersey, should wear solid black whenever a "Red Out" is called for. That way we will begin to see just how popular the black jersey really is. Give it a year, or two, for the word to spread. I wear solid black to every game, and my wife wears solid red.

  • Red, black, silver. Don't matter. We r gonna light you punks up. Enjoy the Outback Bowl. War Eagle!!!!

  • If you're not progressive as a program you become a regressive program. If Black jerseys become part of the traditional home game schedule (i.e. all games scheduled after 3:30pm) then the fans can wear Red when the Dawgs wear Red and wear Black when the Dawgs wear Black. Like it or not, kids choose to go to programs for many different reasons and uniforms are part of the recruiting deal. I'm not saying UGA jumps ship and starts wearing crazy combos but change can be marketed and molded by tradition. Jimmie, your comment about the black uniform representing "the contributions of Wally Butts(Silver Britches), Vince Dooley(Super G logo), and Mark Richt(Black Jerseys). Now, to me, that’s tradition perfected." is probably the best argument against those arguing to not mess with tradition. I love it and I will be wearing my custom silver britches and black polo on Saturday. Whether the fans wear Red or Black, we better be loud because a loud fan is better for the Dawgs regardless of color choice.
