Georgia, SMU schedule home-and-home basketball series
The Georgia Bulldogs have scheduled a home-and-home basketball series with the SMU Mustangs, the school announced on Wednesday.
In the first game of the series, Georgia will host SMU at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens on Friday, December 20, 2019. The Bulldogs will travel to face the Mustangs next season at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas, on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020.
This season’s matchup in Athens will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men’s basketball.
“We’re excited about the matchup with SMU,” UGA head coach Tom Crean said. “This not only adds a quality opponent to our home schedule for this season, it also gives us a chance to play in Dallas next season, where the University of Georgia has an extremely large and loyal alumni base.”
SMU finished the 2018-19 season 15-17 overall and 6-12 in Conference USA action.
SMU is the fourth non-conference game announced for Georgia’s 2019-20 basketball schedule. The Bulldogs are also scheduled to host in-state rival Georgia Tech on Nov. 20, travel to take on Arizona State on Dec. 14, and travel to face Memphis on Jan. 4.
The Georgia-Memphis contest is part of a new scheduling alliance between the SEC and the American Athletic Conference. The four SEC teams that don’t take part in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge will instead play home-and-homes with members of The American.
It was not immediately clear if the Georgia-SMU series is part of that alliance or was scheduled solely between the two schools.
The Hoop Dawgs are also set to play in the 2019 Maui Invitational, along with BYU, Dayton, Kansas, Michigan State, UCLA, Virginia Tech, and tournament host Chaminade. The tournament is scheduled for Nov. 25 through Nov. 27 at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii.
