Mel Tucker is likely to be named the new defensive coordinator at UGA, according to reports by UGASports.com and other outlets.
Tucker (bio) is currently the assistant head coach and defensive backs coach at Alabama. He worked with then defensive coordinator Kirby Smart for one season (2015). Prior to that, Tucker was the defensive coordinator for the NFL’s Chicago Bears in 2013 and 2014.
Alabama is playing Clemson in the College Football National Championship on Monday, Jan. 11. That is likely the reason why Kirby Smart has not named a defensive coordinator yet if he (Tucker) is coming from Tuscaloosa.
If Tucker is named, he should be the last on-field hire for Kirby Smart’s new Georgia Bulldogs coaching staff. Here’s a look at the staff as it stands now:
Offense
- Jim Chaney – Offensive Coordinator/QB’s
- Sam Pittman – Offensive Line
- Dell McGee – Running Backs
- James Coley – Wide Receivers
- Shane Beamer – Tight Ends/Special Teams
Defense
- Tracy Rocker – Defensive Line
- Kevin Sherrer – Defense
- Glenn Schumann – Defense

Established DC@UGA in exchange for a defensive coach @ALA does not make sense. Screwed my opinion. Look IMHO at the recruits we are losing
Mel Tucker has been a DC for much longer than Pruitt. He was a DC in the NFL for years, and he was second in line behind Pruitt at Bama. He's also not an idiot who will cause problems with other coaches. Tracy Rocker already implied he caused a mutiny.
Meltucher is the bestDC and will help Georgiawin the Sec championship
This guy was a DC twice in the NFL and he was a train wreck at both places...Jacksonville and my Bears. The Bears have been around 96 years and they set records for their worst defensive stats in their team history. The last year he was the Bears DC...they gave up over 6,000 yards in defense for the 1st time in team history and 6 yards a play. His defenses set records for points allowed and rushing yards allowed. This would be a HUGE mistake. I am a life long Bears fan and went to UGA
Is it all about the stats or maybe it was the players that the GM drafted and/or signed? You can't just look at the numbers and form your opinion.
No matter who Smart hired as his assistant coaches, people will always find something to complain about!!!!!! First it was Get rid of Richt, then We hire one of the most sought after coaches in college ball, and lets not forget both he and his wife were athletes at UGA, and lets also not forget he has been the DC of the best defense in college ball for 3-5 years, and he has several National Championships, but that's not good enough because he has never been a head coach before, but these people don't realize that Georgia has only hired 1 coach in the last 40-50 years that had head coaching experience and that was Jim Donavon. Some people will never be happy. Seeing as we fired one of the winningest coaches in UGA history in a year where there were numerous Head Coaching vacancies at several major programs I am pretty DAMN HAPPY with the Coach Kirby Smart hire. We at the least owe him the benefit of the doubt before we start to criticize when it comes to who he hires to make up his staff at least until they give us reason not to. Oh and by the way several of the recruits that de committed after Kirby Smart was hired did so mainly because Richt was fired and for a few of them they committed and then de committed from more than just UGA in some cases UGA was the Third school that they had committed to!!!!!!
HH, a Jags fan, saw most of MT games, did a decent job here. Unable to connect MT and JP at ALA . No evidence IMHO that JP caused problems nor did TR call him out to cause a mutiny. IMHO I think he referenced those that quit on the Team(coaches). JP did his job on the Recruit trail before he was hired by NS.
wc, we will know if the best DC over JP came to UGA in 2016.
Thanks
Al, that would have been so much better if you'd just written the ENTIRE post in abbreviations.
