During an interview on the Paul Finebaum Show today, former UGA wide receiver Hines Ward said he would like to join Kirby Smart’s coaching staff.

Hines Ward has never coached before, but he talked about coaching for the Georgia Bulldogs back in 2012.

“I always say that if I wanted to get back into coaching, the University of Georgia would probably be my first place,” Ward said. “Just because I want to give back to my university and I feel like I have a lot to offer the state of Georgia, and to the kids. Because I’ve been in their shoes before.”

Hines Ward played at UGA from 1994 through 1997, while Kirby Smart played for the Dawgs from 1995 through 1998.

Until Smart is officially announced as Georgia’s new head coach, candidates for his coaching staff will be mostly rumor and speculation.

Several reports indicate that Tracy Rocker, Bryan McClendon, and Thomas Brown may remain from Mark Richt’s staff. Defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt may be pushed out or take a job elsewhere, while offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will almost certainly move on.

As far as replacements for Schottenheimer, one name being frequently mentioned is current WKU OC/QB Coach Tyson Helton.

  • Heck yeah we would love to have u back in Athens coaching our WR core use to love watching Hines Ward I think he would be a great addition to our coaching staff!!?????✌✌Go Dawgs??????

  • Hines could coach many positions but I would love to see him coach the wide receivers. He was undersized and not the fastest guy but still one of the best I've ever seen play that position in college and the NFL. Solid fundamentals all round!

  • UGA needs to hire these people mentioned above, along with "Hershel Walker" as the of course Running Backs Coach !!

  • I like Hines and he was a great player at Georgia and the Steelers. He may be a nice addition, but we already have a receivers coach. One of the best recruiters in the south. Voted the top recruiter 2 years ago. He has also been a coach for years now with praise from coaches around, boht high school and college. Nothing against Hines but, he has never coached and everyone wants to replace McCleadon with him, I dont think so. I dont know what other position he could coach, maybe tight ends? So because we already have a DGD coaching receivers, I dont see Hines on this staff.

  • Hines could probably teach just about any position. He was all over the field at UGA and was versatile in the NFL as well. An exceptional athlete and quick learner no matter what position he was in. I'd love to see him back at Georgia.
