Mike Bobo, Jeremy Pruitt preview preseason practice

Jeremy Pruitt

UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt met with the media today to preview the 2014 season.

Here are some of their quotes from today courtesy of GeorgiaDogs.com, which also has video of the press conference.

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR MIKE BOBO

On Georgia’s offensive line…
“I feel good about where we are up front. We have some maturity and leadership there in that group and have some guys who we feel are a little more athletic than we have been in the past. The bottom line is we still have to go out and play. Potential doesn’t really mean anything yet. But we have a chance to be pretty good up front.”

On freshman RB Nick Chubb…
“Nick is very impressive in the weight room. I think we all knew that coming in. He is very strong and loves the weight room. Talking to the strength coaches, they say he comes to work every day and goes about his business. He doesn’t say a whole lot, but he is a great kid and is focused on getting better at whatever the coaches ask him to do in the weight room or on the field when they are working together. I think Nick is going to do well here because of his attitude and his work ethic.”

On Georgia’s running backs…
“You have two guys who are veterans in Todd (Gurley) and Keith (Marshall) and a second year player in (Brendan) Douglas who got to play last year and gained some confidence with his teammates and probably gained confidence in himself that he can play and be effective. Then you have two freshmen. We have 29 practices to figure out who can give us the best chance to provide us some depth and help us win some games. All those guys will be involved in the special teams and that also gives guys confidence to know they can go out there and play when their number is called.”

On the return of Georgia’s skill players who sustained injuries a year ago…
“All of the guys look good. They have a great mindset and they are anxious to get out there and show what they can do again. We just have to be careful with all of them and have that in mind with the way we practice. We have to be mindful with the guys coming off injuries.”

On Georgia’s offense in 2014 after the departure of Aaron Murray…
“When you lose a guy who was as prolific as Aaron, there is a little bit of concern just because he played in so many games and his experience. But I am very confident in Hutson (Mason) and the experience that he got last year. We are going to set goals and strive to reach them every week, but if we win 10-7 or 7-6 I really don’t care. I want to figure out the best way to win, and our guys are that way. Ultimately we all want to score points and set records, but we want to win football games and try to get back to Atlanta.”

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JEREMY PRUITT

On the defensive players’ level of fitness…
“I think we’re heading in the right direction. We had a lot of guys that have changed their body over the summer, which is a positive. We had some guys put on some weight and some guys lose weight. The big thing is their body composition as far as their percentage of body fat, and I think a lot of guys have done really well this summer.”

(On how comfortable he is with subbing in different players for different packages…
“Well right now I’m not very comfortable at all. We’ve got a lot of guys that don’t have a lot of experience at all. Some of them are about to have their first practices at Georgia this week. So we have to figure that out. We’ll do what we can do. We’d like to be able to matchup and do some things as far as personnel (is involved) but we’re only going to try and get the guys on the field that have proven that we can trust them to play. If that’s 11 its 11. If it’s 30 its 30. Over the next few weeks time will tell.”

On his level of excitement heading into camp…
“I think every football coach across the country, when it gets to this point, can’t wait to get started. It seems like, for me, each year it can’t get here fast enough. The last three nights I’ve had [players] over to the house and just sat around talking and I can see it in their eyes. They’re eager to get started, and that’s exciting to me.”

On potential leaders of the defense…
“I feel like we have a lot of guys who have the ability to be leaders on defense. We really do. I think they have grown and started taking responsibility this summer. Not just seniors, but some underclassmen as well. We’re kind of moving in a positive direction there. There has been a little bit of ownership.”

On what he’s looking for most from players in the secondary over the next few weeks…
“When I talk to the guys, we have one goal for this fall: we want to get better every day. We want to do our best in everything we do. Just do our best. That’s our expectation. To do our best every day. When it comes to that it’s going to be guys who play the ball well in the deep part of the field. To me that’s the most important thing when it comes to a defensive back: who can play the ball in the deep part of the field. Obviously that’s where the big plays are created. We’ll see who plays with toughness, who can play man-to-man, who tackles well, who can sustain and do it over a period of time. I think all of the guys can do it, but we want to see who can do it over and over and over. That will be the difference.”
