Uga VIII “Big Bad Bruce” has Lymphoma

Uga VIII, a/k/a Big Bad Bruce, has been diagnosed with lymphoma, UGA announced yesterday. He will continue to make athletic appearances if he is healthy enough.

Uga VIII was born on September 12, 2009. His first game on the sidelines was on October 16, 2010 against Vanderbilt. Big Bad Bruce currently has a record of 3-3. He was unable to attend the Liberty Bowl due to his illness.

From the UGA release:

The dog missed the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 30, 2010, because of a gastrointestinal condition that prevented him from traveling with the football team. Further diagnostic tests revealed the more serious medical condition.

Uga VIII, whose registered name is Big Bad Bruce, is being treated by spets at the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine; his primary veterinarian is his namesake, Dr. Bruce Hollett. Dr. Hollett has provided medical care for the Uga line for many years, said Sonny Seiler, Uga’s owner, in announcing this mascot during the 2010 football season.

  • Sorry about UGA VIII. No one wants to see a dog suffer.

That said, it's time for Georgia to break with tradition and move away from these line-bred creatures and adopt the American Bulldog as the new mascot--a dog breed that can really fight and bite instead of a stylized, overweight, bow-legged creature with a bad underbite and an English heritage.

  • John Z, not even. Why break tradition with this beautiful loving creature? Bulldogs are fierce looking dogs that you would not want to mess with, yet they are the sweetest most loving dogs i have happened to come across. i own four of them, and they really are characters. why break with tradition when everyone agrees with and loves it? no reason. here's to many more years with these beautiful love animals as a mascot for an amazing college

  • This is such a sad thing for Big Bruce to have passed away. I know Dr. Hollett did everything in his power to save him. The Seilers have been through enough without any "bad mouthing" about the breeding.
The English Bulldog has been Ga.'s mascot for so many , many years it would be absolutely rediculous to have another breed, they are wonderful and loyal dogs. Diseases happen in all breeds so speak only good things about the UGAS'. Bruce's death really sadden me but I will anxiously be waiting for the first football game to see UGA VIX , or VIIII.
