Florida Crushes Georgia 49-10 in Jacksonville. What’s Next?

Georgia Bulldogs

The Florida Gators crushed the Georgia Bulldogs 49-10 in Jacksonville on Saturday. What went wrong for the Bulldogs? Just about everything. Turnovers, questionable playcalling on both sides of the ball, dropped passes, missed field goals, failed onside kick and so on. The Bulldogs, who felt they had turned the momentum in this series after a 42-30 win last year, squandered their opportunity away early and never recovered.

Where do the Bulldogs go from here? I believe the Georgia football program is at a crossroads. They are an elite program, i.e. a Top 10 program annually. However, UGA has hit a plateau in that they have been at this level almost the entire Mark Richt era but simply cannot make it to the BCS Championship game. Mark Richt needs to assess the program and staff thoroughly and make any necessary changes.

What changes should Richt make? A new defensive coordinator? A new offensive coordinator? Who’s to say? But one thing is for sure, there are some glaring weaknesses for the Bulldogs. Under the playcalling of Mike Bobo, UGA is having a tough time scoring touchdowns in the red zone. And since Willie Martinez has become the defensive coordinator, the D has lost their tenacity and is giving up around three more points per game every year.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to no. 14 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and the AP Poll. The latest BCS rankings, which don’t matter at this point for UGA, have the Dawgs at 13th.

Next up for Georgia is a trip to Lexington to face the Kentucky Wildcats. The Cats are coming off of a 14-13 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville.
