OXFORD, Miss. — After building a 28-0 halftime lead over No. 10 Ole Miss on Saturday night at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, the No. 2-ranked Georgia football team rolled to a dominant 42-7 win thanks to a stellar performance from the offense and defense in front of a sellout crowd of 68,814.
A week after holding Florida scoreless through three quarters in a 28-7 win, Georgia (8-1, 6-1 SEC) led 35-0 entering the fourth quarter Saturday. Ole Miss (6-3, 4-3) came into the game averaging 37.1 points and 439.6 yards per game, but the Bulldog defense held it to 252 yards and one score. The Bulldogs finished with five sacks for minus-40 yards.
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton threw for 186 yards and four touchdowns, including three to wide receiver Talyn Taylor. The Bulldog rushing attack powered its way to 295 yards on 48 carries, with an average of 6.1 yards per rush. Nate Frazier led the way with 107 yards on 16 carries, including a 46-yarder on Georgia’s first play of the game. The Bulldogs outgained the Rebels 481-252.
In a rematch of a College Football Playoff quarterfinal last season, won by the Rebels, 39-34, the game couldn’t have started better for the Bulldogs. After forcing an Ole Miss three-and-out on the game’s opening drive, Frazier ran for 46 yards to get the offense rolling. Later, on third-and-7 at the Rebel 23, Stockton hit Taylor for 11 yards. The Bulldogs capped the drive with a 4-yard Craig Dandridge Jr. touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead with 10:16 to go in the first quarter.
Georgia’s defense forced another Rebels punt on Ole Miss’ second drive, and the Bulldogs again drove for a score. After starting at its 4-yard line, Georgia got a 6-yard Frazier rush, a 13-yarder from Stockton and a 19-yarder from tight end Jaden Reddell. On the next play, Stockton hit Taylor deep on the right side for a 58-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 6:18 left in the quarter.
Ole Miss’ next drive ended with a missed 56-yard field goal, giving the Bulldogs the ball at their 39. A 23-yard completion from Stockton to Reddell later gave Georgia first down at the Rebel 8 on the final play of the first quarter. Two plays later, Stockton hit tight end Ethan Barbour for a 3-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead with 14:16 left in the half.
Georgia had to punt on its next drive, and London Humphreys downed Drew Miller’s boot at the Rebel 2. That led to a third three-and-out forced by the Bulldog defense, and Georgia took over at the 50 with 6:29 to go until halftime. A pass interference penalty on third-and-3 gave Georgia a first down at the Rebel 28. A few plays later, Stockton ran the ball in from the 15 for a 28-0 lead with 2:42 left in the half.
Ole Miss drove deep into Georgia territory late in the half, but safety Khalil Barnes sacked Chambliss for a 16-yard loss back to the UGA 30. On the next play, safety KJ Bolden intercepted a Chambliss pass and returned it to the Rebel 44 with 46 seconds left.
Georgia’s Rasean Dinkins made the first big play of the second half, stripping Chambliss, recovering the fumble and returning it 17 yards to the Ole Miss 22. On third-and-goal from the 6, Stockton scrambled away from a heavy rush and found Taylor in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown and a 35-0 lead with 1:37 to play in the third.
Ole Miss finally got on the scoreboard with 10:43 remaining when Shekai Mills-Knight ran the ball in from the 8, making it 35-7. Georgia answered on the ensuing drive with a 65-yard touchdown pass from Stockton to Taylor, pushing the lead to 42-7 with 9:06 to go. Taylor finished with four catches for 140 yards and three scores.
Linebacker Chris Cole led the defense with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks. Ten different Bulldogs had at least three stops.
The Bulldogs are back between the hedges next week when they host No. 18 Missouri. The Tigers lost at home Saturday, 34-20, to No. 7 Texas.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart
Opening Statement…
“For tonight, our guys really came in and focused. We talked about being on the line, being impressed with the company from the start. The defense coaches had a great plan. The defense coaches did a great job of staying aggressive. We wanted to hold the line of scrimmage, and I thought we did that. On the next one now. They just get bigger from here. To say that wasn’t a big win, it was a tough place to play. A quarterback that I have tremendous respect for. Coach Pete [Golding] is a great coach. Tonight wasn’t their night, it was ours, and our guys played hard.”
On the preparation for this game….
“I was really proud of the whole defense staff. Glenn [Schumann] does a great job. Played them twice last year. We left a lot of plays out there, and it was really to get those right. We gave them a lot of time, and it was an issue. When you give him [Chambliss] less time, and try to get in, he still may get you. He [Schumann] did a good job, called the game, and our kids stuck to the plan. The plan was to possess the ball offensively, own the line scrimmage, they did that in the first half. Stay aggressive on the defense. The kids bought into that. There were a lot of things that they did in that game.”
On the physicality of the team…
“That makes the game what it is. If you run the ball, that makes a lot of the play action easier. Physicality is our brand of football. It allows Gunner to take shots and do things he is capable of. A combination of that really helps. We couldn’t do it without leaning on the offensive line and some good backs. A great staff, a good offensive staff. They still believe in the hat on the hat and running things. A lot of people don’t do that. We still do what we do in the running game, and we showed it tonight.”
On getting off to a fast start offensively…
“It was a big factor because they lasted the whole game and it was impactful last time We felt like we could take them out of the game. We could run the ball well. We got to be multi-dimensional. I thought we were tonight.”
On the message after this game…
“It’s a week away from the humility. We sat on the road last night. It came at night. It’s a really good team too. We didn’t take care of business the next week. How do you handle success? Our guys have started kind of leading each other. I don’t know about the new players. That was about the culture on our team and kind of leadership. Did they go about work the right way? It’s not going to be any different next week. We’ve got a good team coming to Athens next week. We’re beat up. We’re banged up. So is everybody else in the league.”
#14 Gunner Stockton | 5th | QB
On facing Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss…
“It’s just one of our games. I have a lot of respect for Trinidad. I got to play with them last year for the Manning camp. I got to spend a lot of time with them. I think they’re one of the best teams out there. I have a lot of respect for them.”
On RB Nate Frazier….
“The first play, being explosive. He runs the ball hard. He runs the ball hard on the team. It definitely shows that way.”
On having OL Drew Bobo in this game…
“I think he was happy to be able to stop him last year, but he’s always bringing his best every game. You’re going to get the best out of Drew.”
On the win compared to last season’s matchups with Ole Miss….
“It’s two ends of the spectrum but definitely, now it’s a great win. We’re going to enjoy it. We’ve got a game next week. It’s got to get better each week.”
On preparing for Missouri next week…
“I think definitely. You don’t want to repeat. I thought we had a good week ahead of Auburn. Definitely don’t want to hit a the wall or anything like that. Just attack it like we did this week.”
#5 Raylen Wilson | Sr. | ILB
On the environment…
“It was definitely a tough place to play. We showed out how we could. We did everything we could and that was enough.”
On what this game shows…
“This just shows us that if we execute, we can beat anybody. Ole Miss is a great team. They have a great offense and great defense.”
On what worked well for the defense…
“I’d say we were coming out on more because we were dialing it up. We didn’t miss our layups. We got them down where we needed to.”
#4 KJ Bolden | Jr. | DB
On the meaning of this win…
“We’re on the hunt. Last year was heartbreaking for sure. Losing a whole season like that, a long field goal like that. They had a great team last year. They have a great team this year, but we’re just on the hunt. It didn’t mean more to us this year.”
On containing Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss…
“You can’t be selfish, can’t try to beat your guy and run all the way around. He steps up and scramble. You can’t do that. You have to rush as a unit, keep him in the trap, keep him in the pocket.”
On his interception…
“I really thought he went for the ball out of bounds. I thought he went for the ball out of bounds. We sent a bus at him, like six, I think. We sent the six of them. They got home and he kind of scrambled out. I was just kind of moving over with him a little bit, and then I just kind of saw the ball and play. I was like, ‘This is great.’ This is going to go right to me.”
