The Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers have mutually agreed to cancel their upcoming four‑game football series, according to a report from the Athens Banner-Herald.
The two programs were originally scheduled to open the series on September 15, 2029, at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, followed by a return matchup at Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium on August 31, 2030. Additional games were set for September 4, 2032, in Athens and September 3, 2033, in Clemson.
Per the Banner‑Herald, the schools “mutually agreed to cancel” all four contests, as detailed in a termination document signed on March 12 by Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks and Clemson athletic director Graham Neff. The document states that “the parties have mutually agreed to terminate the Contracts and all of the provisions of those contracts, including payment requirements.”
Copies of the original agreements, obtained through a previous records request, show liquidated damages ranging from $1 million per game for cancellations made 24 months or more in advance to $1.5 million for cancellations within 12 months of the scheduled date. Because the termination is mutual, both schools avoided the penalties.
Georgia and Clemson finalized the contracts for the series in 2018 and 2019, during a period when both programs were aggressively building out marquee nonconference schedules. Since then, the landscape has shifted significantly. Both the SEC and ACC have moved to nine‑game conference slates, prompting schools across both leagues to reevaluate long‑term scheduling commitments and reduce the number of high‑profile nonconference series.
For Georgia, the cancellation provides additional flexibility as the Bulldogs continue to navigate a future schedule that already features major nonconference opponents—including previously announced dates with Florida State and Ohio State, and the annual Georgia Tech contest—as well as the expanded SEC rotation. The shift to a nine‑game league schedule has tightened available nonconference windows, making long‑range scheduling more complex for programs across the conference.
The Bulldogs and Tigers have met 66 times, with Georgia holding a 44–19–4 advantage in the all‑time series. The two teams last played in 2024, when Georgia defeated Clemson 34-3 in the Aflac Kickoff Game in Atlanta.
