The Georgia Bulldogs have added the Akron Zips to their 2029 football schedule, according to a report by FBSchedules.com. The copy of the game contract was obtained from the University of Akron via a state open records request.
Georgia will host Akron for the first time at Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., on Saturday, August 25, 2029. The Bulldogs will pay the Zips a $1.5 million guarantee for the game, according to the contract.
The date of the Georgia-Akron game would have been September 1, but a stipulation in the agreement called for the game to be played August 25 if the NCAA would “…change and allow for the start of the 2029 intercollegiate regular football season to begin a week prior.” The NCAA confirmed that change in June, which makes the weekend preceding Labor Day—commonly known as Week Zero— the official opening weekend (Week 1) for both FBS and FCS programs beginning next season.
The addition of Akron gives Georgia its third and final non‑conference opponent for 2029, though the slate could still change. The Bulldogs are scheduled to visit Clemson on Sept. 15 and Georgia Tech on Nov. 24 that season.
With two road non‑conference games, four SEC road trips — Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State, and Tennessee — and a neutral‑site matchup against Florida as the designated away team, Georgia is currently slated for just five games at Sanford Stadium in 2029. That imbalance suggests something is likely to change, whether it’s the Clemson game shifting to a neutral site or being replaced by a home opponent.
The third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs are scheduled to open the 2026 season on Saturday, September 5 against the Tennessee State Tigers in Athens. The game will kickoff at 3:00pm ET and will be a streaming-only event on SEC Network+ (Buy Tickets).
