The Georgia Bulldogs are just 83 days away from returning to Sanford Stadium to launch their 2025 season against the Marshall Thundering Herd on August 31. With another national championship run on the horizon, SicEmDawgs.com is continuing its countdown series by highlighting defensive lineman No. 83, Cole Speer.
Though listed as a wide receiver, Cole Speer has become one of Georgia’s most dependable and selfless contributors, embodying the “do your job” mentality that’s been central to the Bulldogs’ sustained dominance. Entering his fourth season in Athens, Speer may not be the flashiest name in Georgia’s deep receiver room, but his value to the team, especially on special teams, cannot be overstated.
The Calhoun, Georgia native saw action in every game during the 2024 season, mainly in a reserve receiver role and on special teams. His experience on both kickoff and punt coverage units has made him a trusted weapon in hidden-yardage battles, where games are often won or lost. That physical, fearless mentality was forged at Calhoun High School, where Speer earned All-State honors and helped lead his team to the 5A state title game as a senior.
Speer’s offensive reps have come primarily on backup duty, but his connection with projected starting quarterback Gunner Stockton could be a storyline to watch this fall. The two were part of Georgia’s scout team together as first-year players and have developed chemistry over the years while working with the second-team offense. That continuity and familiarity could make Speer a reliable target in specific packages or situations, particularly if injuries strike the top of the depth chart.
What makes Speer especially valuable is his versatility. He’s fast, tough, and plays with a chip on his shoulder, traits that Kirby Smart and Georgia’s coaching staff covet. When listing fast as a trait for Speer, it’s important to note that means very fast! Speer ran a 4.38 40-yard dash coming out of high school. Whether it’s sprinting down the field to make a special teams tackle or lining up in a key third-down set, Speer is the kind of player who thrives in the margins and elevates the Bulldogs’ overall execution.
As Georgia gears up for another playoff push, players like Cole Speer remind fans and opponents alike that championship teams are built on more than stars; they’re built on depth, discipline, and guys who embrace their roles.
