Georgia safety Malaki Starks saw his NFL dream become reality on Thursday night, as he was taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the No. 27 overall pick by the Baltimore Ravens. The selection marks the next step in what has already been an impressive football journey for the standout defensive back from Jefferson, Georgia.

Starks arrived at Georgia as one of the most highly touted recruits in the country and immediately lived up to expectations. Over the course of three seasons, he became a leader in the secondary, finishing his college career with 197 total tackles, 6 interceptions, 6 tackles for loss, and 17 passes defended. He played in 43 games for the Bulldogs and became a consistent difference-maker on the back end of the defense.

In 2024, Starks took his game to another level, leading the team with 77 tackles while adding 4 tackles for loss, an interception, and three pass breakups. His performance that year earned him unanimous All-American honors, cementing his status as one of the nation’s premier safeties. Whether in coverage, run support, or pre-snap communication, Starks was the anchor of Georgia’s secondary.

Scouts at the NFL Combine took notice of his athletic ability and football IQ. Measuring in at 6-foot-1 and around 205 pounds, he ran a 4.50-second 40-yard dash and displayed smooth movement skills in drills — further proof that his athleticism translates to the next level. While some evaluators saw areas for refinement in short-area agility, his instincts and versatility more than made up for it.

Off the field, Starks was known for his strong character and academic success. He majored in sports management and was active in community service efforts, earning recognition for his leadership away from football as well.

For the Ravens, drafting Starks brings immediate help in the secondary and long-term potential at a premium position. He’s the kind of player who can be a tone-setter for a defense — and now, he’ll look to do just that at the professional level.
