Asa Newell named SEC Freshman of the Week

Georgia basketball’s Asa Newell has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the week of Dec. 9, the SEC announced Monday.

Asa Newell was named SEC Freshman of the Week following his performance in Georgia’s 69-48 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the SEC/ACC Challenge last Tuesday at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga. Newell recorded 20 points, 11 rebounds, and a season-high two assists in the win.

Trough nine games, Newell leads Georgia in scoring with 15.9 points per game and in rebounding with 6.7 rebounds per game.

This is the second time this season that Asa Newell has been named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week. Newell also garnered the designation for the week of Nov. 18 after he averaged 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 1.5 assists in wins over Georgia Tech and North Florida.

The Georgia Bulldogs (8-1) are next scheduled to face the Grand Canyon Antelopes in Holiday Hoopsgiving on Saturday, Nov. 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Ga. The game will be televised by the SEC Network at 6:00pm ET.
