Georgia to open 2025 season vs. Marshall; UCLA series canceled

Georgia Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs will open the 2025 season at home against the Marshall Thundering Herd, the school announced on Wednesday.

Georgia will host Marshall at Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025. The game will mark only the second meeting between the two schools in football.

In their first gridiron meeting back in 2004, the Bulldogs topped the Thundering Herd 13-3.

The remainder of Georgia’s non-conference schedule in 2025 includes Austin Peay and Charlotte in Athens on Sept. 6 and Nov. 22, respectively, and Georgia Tech on the road on Nov. 29.

Georgia was previously scheduled to open the 2025 season against the UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., on Aug. 30. That game, as well as the return game in Athens in 2026, have both been mutually canceled.

News of the UGA-UCLA series cancellation was first reported by UGASports.com earlier this year. UCLA also announced today that their future series with Auburn in 2027 and 2028 has also been axed.

The cancellation of the UCLA series and other changes around college football scheduling indicate that the SEC is likely to move to a nine-game conference schedule beginning with the 2026 season.

Georgia’s 2026 non-league slate now includes Western Kentucky at home on Sept. 12, Louisville on the road on Sept. 19, and Georgia Tech at home on Nov. 27.
