The calls coming to former Georgia head coach Mark Richt are fast approaching. The first report came flying out Monday night from 247 Sports that the Maryland Terrapins have reached out to Richt for his services, and a meeting could occur tomorrow.
There is an evident connection between Richt and Maryland. Former Georgia athletic director Damon Evans is currently the senior associate athletic director for the Terrapins. Richt and Evans worked well during Evans’ tenure in Athens, and that could be a big factor in Maryland landing Richt.
With the rumors of Richt being interviewed for this coaching job, the opportunity for him to remain with Georgia in some capacity is temporarily put to sleep. In today’s joint press conference with athletic director Greg McGarity, Richt said he would consider other coaching opportunities “without a doubt.” This leads me to believe he hopes to make an impact at another university rather than have an administrative role.
On his weekly radio show this evening, Richt stated that he was contacted today by five schools inquiring about his services. One of those was likely Maryland, and two other are probably Miami and Virginia.
We shall await to see what Richt’s fate will be. He certainly deserves another opportunity on the sideline, due to his remarkable record and the values he possesses. He will be wished the best wherever he may be headed.

Can you imagine how much pressure will be on UGA's new head coach???? He will be expected to start winning SEC championships immediately. After all, he'll be following a 10-3 or 9-4 season that wasn't good enough for Richt to keep his job. He'll also be expected to continue having a top 10 recruiting class every year. It sounds so ridiculous when you say it out loud. I hope our next coach is as amazing as he's supposed to be or it will be evident very quickly that the decision to release Richt was just plain stupid. I guess patience is not a virtue possessed by many fans these days. Dooley didn't win a National Championship until his 17th season. I also question our priorities. Sure, winning a National Championship would be great, but Richt's first priority was to make sure that these kids are great people who will contribute to the greater good of society. Maybe the world would be a better place if our priorities were more inline with Richt's. Watch this short interview after the Missouri game if you need an example. Richt is an amazing person.
