Todd Grantham accepts defensive coordinator position at Louisville

UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has been offered and has accepted the same position at Louisville, Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com and Joe Schad of ESPN have reported.

Just after that report, Joe Schad of ESPN tweeted that Todd Grantham has accepted the offer to coach at Louisville and that his contract will be for five years at $1 million per year.

UGA has not yet released a statement confirming the news, but Anthony Dasher of UGASports.com confirmed the news through a UGA source.

Grantham leaving might explain why Mark Richt postponed his end of season press conference yesterday.

On Thursday, UGA announced that secondary coach Scott Lakatos was leaving due to “personal reasons.”

Update (6:27pm ET)

From UGA:

University of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has been offered, and accepted, a similar position at the University of Louisville according to an announcement Sunday by UGA head coach Mark Richt.

“We are appreciative of all the contributions Todd has made to our program and wish him nothing but the best,” Richt said. “But at the same time the opportunity to work at Georgia is extremely attractive and there already is, and will be, interest from some very, very outstanding coaches. We have a lot of defensive players coming back, as well as some outstanding defensive recruits, and there’s going to be plenty of interest in coaching them. I’m excited about the prospects of a great defensive coordinator being on board as quickly as possible.”

Grantham just completed his fourth season as Georgia’s defensive coordinator.

  • Richt needs to snatch up ole boy from Michigan State or Kirby Smart needs to come home to UGA. There is no other option !!

  • BAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA....I am a Georgia fan and a sucker is born every minute...THANKYOU Louisville....5 years or less you will need a new DC the man can't coach a lick..look at 2012 defense a UGA studs and stars all over the field and still could not stop anyone.

    • You're out of your mind. UGA's offense has been stellar under Bobo. Check total offensive number in the SEC over the past 5 years. The issue has been the defense and special teams play. Try again.

  • One more to go Richt and than Georgia becomes a national power once again. Look it’s simple all we must do is hire Kirby Smart as our DC with the promise that Richt will retire in a year and he will become the head coach. Than Smart closes the Georgia border for recruiting and keeps the talent home. This is what Florida State did with Fisher and look what he did in a few short years.

  • Chris Wilson would be a great promotion as D.C. and find a great D Backs/ special teams coach
