Georgia's Ray Drew Ejected after Bad Targeting Call

Georgia defensive lineman Ray Drew was ejected from the Vanderbilt game today after what looks like a very bad targeting call.

With just over eleven minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter, Drew (#47) came in virtually unblocked and hit Vanderbilt quarterback Austin Carter Samuels. Drew extended his arms and hit Carter Samuels in the chest, and his facemask also appeared to hit the Vandy QB.

The play was reviewed, as all targeting calls are, and the ejection was upheld. It’s seems very obvious that this was not targeting, just a late hit on the quarterback.

Impartial fans and writers have even taken to Twitter to defend Drew and dispute the call. What do you think? Check out the GIF of the hit below.

  • I say we need to just give them flags. No more hitting or tackling at all. That call is up to interpretation. Some gets tossed out and some don't. I don't get this call.

    • I think he was going to call a hold on Vandy. Should still have called it, poor decision.

  • Refs have been trying to make this call look stupid from the start of the season and they are succeeding. I think this is on purpose to get it done away with.

  • The 15 yard penalty mandatory part of it anyway. I think of its blatant then it needs to stand

  • It seems that this season has come apart at the seams. Special teams is just horrible, the defense can't hold any opponent under 30 points, and, it is becoming painfully apparent that the offense is nothing special w/o Gurley, Marshall, and those 3 or 4 receivers that have gone down with season ending injuries.

I guess we can only hope for improvement in all phases of this team going forward so we can end up with some modicum of respect. I never dreamed, upon season's start, I would be saying, "oh well, guess we will have to wait until next year" a little over halfway through the season.

    • Richt is going to let his assistants cost him his job. Bobo the clown has no balls and plays too conservative. His play calling consists of; run, run, pass, punt.

  • Both "targeting" calls were bogus in my opinion. The one on 4th down against Ramik Wilson was even a worse call than this one. Review overturned it, but the Personal Foul penalty still held up giving Vandy a 1st down. Would have been our ball around the 20 with a 13 point lead and about half a quarter left to go. Instead, Vandy gets automatic 1st down and a TD on a play that when reviewed, was overturned. Chalk that Vandy win up to the zebras.

  • The head referee is from Columbia Missouri. Hard to believe the SEC lets him call these games. It is obvious that he is not unbiased in his calls. This is very sad. The flag definitely comes out before the hit. Shame on the SEC. What happened to "let the best team win"?

  • Its all BS. Targeting has good intentions but the interpretation is crap. Not blaming the call for our piss poor play on both sides of the ball (blame coordinators) but still influenced outcome. Targeting is the stupidest penalty in sports.

  • Is it targeting??? Probably not. However, if you play disciplined football, you don't hit him that late (that was real late) and the controversy never even occurs. The refs did not cost us this one. We put ourselves in that position.

    • That is the most pitiful call I have ever seen....ref should be excused of his duties and never be allowed to ref an SEC game again!!! This bullshit should not be allowed to happen at this level of football....totally ruins the game and takes all validity out of any outcome. PATHETIC!!!!

  • The QB was defenseless and he was hit high. Ref had no choice by the rule. Stupid play that deserved the penalty.
