Report: 2013 Georgia-Clemson game could move to Monday night

The 2013 Georgia at Clemson game could move to Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told the USA Today this afternoon.

Georgia and Clemson are currently set to renew their rivalry on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 at Death Valley. In their last meeting in 2003, Georgia rolled over the Tigers 30-0 at Clemson.

Both schools will likely enter the 2013 season ranked in the Top 10. Georgia finished the 2012 season ranked 4th in the Coaches Poll and 5th (tie) in the AP Poll. Clemson finished 9th and 11th, respectively.

When asked about the possibility of the game moving to Monday night, Georgia athletics director Greg McGarity said he was “not aware.”

If you look at Georgia’s 2013 schedule, the Bulldogs are not in a good position to play at Clemson on a Monday night. After that game, the Dawgs host South Carolina the following Saturday (Sept. 7). If the Clemson game is played on Monday, that gives Georgia only five days rest.

Clemson, on the other hand, plays host to South Carolina State on Sept. 7. So it’s obvious that Dabo Swinney and company wouldn’t have a problem prepping for an FCS team on a short week.

Even if UGA is eventually approached about moving the game, they should respectfully decline unless further changes are made to Georgia’s 2013 schedule. South Carolina has defeated the Bulldogs three straight games and the contest will likely be a big factor in determining the 2013 SEC East Champion. Georgia definitely needs a full week following Clemson to get ready for that game.
