The Bulldogs plan to appeal the punishment, which seems severe relative to another recent case. Alabama’s Marcell Dareus was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for two games after receiving almost $2,000 in benefits during two trips to Miami for an agent’s party.
And Alabama didn’t even have to appeal the decision. The NCAA lowered Dareus’ suspension from four games to two games due to “mitigating circumstances.”
If Green’s four game suspension holds, he will miss games against South Carolina (9/11), Arkansas (9/18) and Mississippi State (9/25). His first game back will be on October 2 against the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder.
Statement from A.J. Green
“I want to apologize to my coaches, teammates, and the Georgia fans for the mistake in judgment,” Green said in a statement. “I very much regret all that has taken place and the distraction that’s been caused. I’ve learned a valuable lesson and hope others can learn from my mistake. I can only focus my attention now on practicing and looking ahead to getting back with my teammates as quickly as possible.”
