Power forward Marcus Thornton of Westlake High in Atlanta committed to the Georgia Bulldogs today during a ceremony at his school. Thornton is the fourth 2010 commitment for head coach Mark Fox and the Hoop Dawgs.
Thornton, Georgia’s Mr. Basketball for 2010, signed with Clemson in the Fall of 2009 but was released from his scholarship when head coach Oliver Purnell left for DePaul.
Thornton (6-7, 215) committed to UGA over offers from Alabama, Georgia Tech and Texas. He averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds per game and helped lead Westlake to the Class AAAAA state championship game.
Rivals.com ranks Thornton as a 3-star recruit and the no. 26 power forward in the country. Scout.com also ranks him as a 3-star recruit and the no. 34 power forward.
Update – 05/20/2010
Marcus Thornton signed a financial aid agreement with Georgia today and plans to enroll in the Fall. He couldn’t sign a Letter of Intent because the NCAA does not allow student-athletes to sign more than one LOI in a one year period.
